One of the great books of all time it has been translated into many languages. The Tamizh version is a classic. The story of Sri Rama the eighth Avatar of god Vishnu has been told and retold throughout the ages. This rendering by Kalki Krishnamurthy was the first to be written in modern times. It is a complete retelling of the story with great attention to accuracy and detail. In this recording Dr M S Subbulakshmi herself has read out the book from cover to cover, in her inimitable style. This recording was originally released on LP records, on April 12, 1965 by Sree Surya Music Company, Madras. Unfortunately only a few of these LPs are available now. "Krishnamurthy , who has made a mark as an outstanding teacher and fine story-teller with his translations of the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, here translates Valmiki's classic tale of Sri Rama, the Avatar of Vishnu. As he does this, he comments on the story and draws deeper implications from it. His performance is very likeable: lively, colorful but not overly dramatic. He is also thorough and detailed in his treatment, and is especially good at introducing his listeners to obscure details about Hindu culture. This is indeed a memorable reading." (The Hindu) Kalki Krishnamurthy (1899-1959) was born in Triplicane, Madras. He did his schooling in Madras and then joined the Christian College, Tambaram. He did not show any great interest in studies but shone in sports. His famous writings are Sivagamiyin Sapatham , Ponniyin Selvan , Sri Rama Raya , Kalki Krishnamurthy Kathaigal . He was also known as the 'poet of the soil'. "Many of his works are written with an underlying social conscience, eulogising the downtrodden and the exploited. He had the rare ability of describing the great and noble using the commonest images" (The Hindu). Dr. M.S. Subbulakshmi is one of the greatest artists of India, who has won awards both in music and cinema. She was born on 16 September 1916 in Madurai, Madras Presidency (now Tamil Nadu) into a musical family. Her father was an accomplished vocalist and violinist, while her mother played the Tanjore instrument, mizhavu. Her brother was a violinist and she had her early training in music from him. cfa1e77820
